Why is it ventuno and not ventiuno?

When a ten is joined to uno or otto, the ten drops its own final vowel: venti + uno = ventuno, venti + otto = ventotto, trenta + uno = trentuno, quaranta + otto = quarantotto. Every other combination simply glues the two words together with no change: ventidue, sessantacinque, novantasei.

When do Italian numbers take a written accent?

Numbers come up on your very first day in Italy: prices, platforms, house numbers, how long the bus takes. This deck runs from uno to cento, one card per number, with examples from the situations my students meet first — ordering for two, reading a receipt, catching the 55, explaining a fever to the pharmacist. The counting is regular, but three things catch people out: the tens drop their final vowel before uno and otto (ventuno, ventotto, quarantotto), the -tré compounds carry a written accent (ventitré, novantatré), and sei is both "six" and "you are". Learn 1–20 solidly first; after that the tens simply stack.
