What exactly is Russian "мат"?

Мат is the closed set of Russian obscenities built on four roots — хуй, пизда, ебать and блядь — plus a few borderline words such as мудак. Unlike говно or жопа, mat is a category of its own: it is banned from broadcast media and public performances by law, and using it in front of strangers, elders or children is genuinely shocking, not merely rude. Everything else in this deck, from блин to срать, is ordinary rude speech.

Is "блин" a real swear word?

No. Блин literally means "pancake" and works like "darn" or "shoot" in English — it exists precisely so people can avoid saying блядь, which it echoes phonetically. You will hear it from teachers, TV presenters and grandmothers. The same logic gives you капец for пиздец, хрень for хуйня, офигеть for охуеть and хрен for хуй: same rhythm, no taboo.

Which Russian curse words are most likely to get you punched?

Personal insults said to someone's face: козёл, мудак, долбоёб, сука, and пидор (not in this deck — it is also a homophobic slur). Interjections such as блядь, пиздец or бля are far more common and usually aimed at the situation rather than a person, so they offend but rarely provoke violence. The dangerous move is addressing a stranger with an insulting noun; swearing about your own bad luck is much safer.

How do Russians build so many words from one swear root?

With prefixes and suffixes. From ебать you get заебать (to wear out), отъебаться (to leave someone alone), въебать (to hit), наебать (to cheat), ебанутый (crazy). From хуй come хуйня (bullshit), хуёво (badly), нахуй (get lost), охуеть (to be stunned). Learning the four roots plus the standard prefixes lets you decode dozens of words you have never heard before — which is the main reason to study mat at all.
